The Lytle Independent School District was formed in 1884 to provide educational services to the agricultural community headquartered in Lytle, Texas covering the northern-most section of Atascosa and a portion of Medina Counties. 

Lytle ISD offers a wide variety of enrichment programs to students of all ages. The district has a Primary, Elementary, Junior High and High School. High school students have taken Dual Credit college classes since 2008. In 2018, an early college program called P-TECH was added and in May 2023, seven P-TECH students graduated with their Associate’s degree plus industry certifications a couple weeks before receiving their high school diplomas.

In 2021, the district joined the Collegiate Edu-Nation network which is a P-20 program that further expands the attainment of industry certifications and associates degrees for many Career and Technical Education programs of study such as Culinary Arts, Plumbing and Pipefitting, Manufacturing Technology, Welding, Business Management, Cybersecurity, Commercial Photography, and Audio-Visual Technology. Lytle ISD is a Capturing Kids’ Hearts District, and since 2018, the Primary and Elementary schools have earned the Capturing Kids' Hearts National Showcase School status from the Flippen Group.

The district operates under the motto "Empower today, inspire tomorrow."

The Lytle Pirate Athletics program is building a history of state-level appearances and champions. In Cross Country, runner Jeremy Juarez placed fifth at the 2006 State meet. In 2012, the Boys Cross Country team earned the State Runner Up title. The 2013 and 2022 boys teams were State Champions. Also in 2022, the Girls Cross Country team captured third place, winning Bronze State medals. In 2023, Boys Basketball played in the Final Four State Qualifiers Tournament, while Girls Basketball made Lytle history in both 2022 and 2023 as the Regional Runner Up for Conference 3A Elite 8 (one game away from the state tournament.) In 2023 Natalie Pacheco and Mario Diaz both won State Powerlifting Champion titles. As for Track, in 2022, Robert Wagner placed sixth in the 800 meter run, and in 2023 he placed ninth at the State Track meet. In the girls 800 meter race, Moriah Gomez took second place, a State Track Silver medalist in 2023. Overall in 2023, Lytle Athletics won 7 District Championships. 

Since 1972, the Lytle Pirate Band has had twenty students earn All-State Band honors. The most recent being Emelia Garcia in 2021 and Stefan Grigsby in 2022.

For UIL Academics, in 2021 and 2022, Mason Davila placed third at the state level for Number Sense. In 2023, the Social Studies team (Robert Wagner, Samantha Mujica and Miguel Gonzalez won fourth in state, and Robert Wagner placed 7th in the individual Social Studies competition. Lytle's UIL Young Filmmakers production teams have placed in the top six in the state seven times in the past decade, and in 2023, a UIL Young Filmmakers team produced a State Champion Documentary, Housing the Unhoused, which was also named a First Place in State Nobelity Prize Winner.

This district of innovation is led by Superintendent Michelle Carroll Smith and Assistant Superintendent Dustin Breithaupt, Ed.D. The Board of Trustees is made up of LeeAnna Mask, Reagan Wagner, Bobby Sollock, Mae Flores, Bobby Duty, Allan Brown and Jeremy Davenport. "Our district is committed to a vision of education in which we prepare students for their future. Students, staff, parents, and community partner with us as we work toward preparing our learners for a successful life after graduation." says Superintendent Smith.
