Varsity Girls Baskeball at Crystal City

On Tuesday, February 6, 2024, the girls battled in a packed gym with a playoff atmosphere but were able to pull through and claim the win 56-47 to finish District with a 10-0 perfect record and are now 26-7 for the season. The girls were not in sink last night from tip off and were rushing everything, turning the ball over on bad decision making. It was 10-8 to end the first quarter. Coach Wilson told the girls, "You have to calm down, block out all the noise and play your game.” They only had 7 players so foul trouble was a concern and sure enough Zabella had 2 fouls early so the team had to depend on Mona and Valentina, and they came in and did their job. At the half it was 31-21 in Lytle’s favor. The girls wanted to have a big third quarter but that did not happen, it was 15-15 scoring for both teams. In the fourth, the girls knew they had to control the tempo and slow down and use good clock management. They finally locked in and took control of the game and pulled the victory. The team needed a close game like that so they could show the young ones what it is like to be in a pressure situation for playoffs and the older ones needed to be reminded on how to step up and take control of the game. Amelia Martinez is still out and is not sure if she will return anytime soon. It is hurting the team in leadership and defense. It is hard to play in the playoffs with 7 people, but it looks like the Lady Pirates will have to do that!
