Girls Powerlifting Team

Says Coach Pena, “First, on behalf of Coach Gomez and me, I want to thank EVERYONE who helped with the Girls Regional Powerlifting send-off. The event by far exceeded my expectations and I continue to be impressed with all the support shown by the school and community for Lytle Athletics.”

This week, the Powerlifting team took 7 hardworking and competitive young ladies to the Regional Powerlifting Championships in Edinburg, TX. It was a well-run and fast-paced Meet.

There were many difficulties but there was no lack of effort. Every one of these girls pushed beyond their limits in Edinburg. After the dust settled, the Mighty Lady Pirates were able to secure 2 State Qualifiers.

Coach Pena and Gomez with Girls Powerlifting Team Brianna Paredes tested the waters with some heavy attempts but ultimately only needed her opening attempts to hit the State qualifying total. Brianna placed 7th overall in the deepest most stacked weight class in Region 5. I would not be surprised if the Region 5 girls, 123 class, takes the top spots at State. Brianna will be competing for one of those spots.

Brianna ParedesMya Villarreal brought home the 5th place medal after battling some technical issues and some tough competitions. She is advancing to State and will be competing for a stop on the podium in the 97-pound weight class. This is also a good group of lifters coming out of Region 5 headed to State.

Powerlifting has an outstanding group coming back next year. Caitlyn Thompson will have no problem making Regionals next season. Giselle Esparza is pulling double duty with softball but always makes time to put in work. Janessa Barrintos is always willing to put in the extra work. Valeria Gonzalez just absolutely enjoys the weight room and competing against herself. Nayelli Pacheco has the work ethic and coachable attitude that makes coaching so much easier and so much more fun.

The Boys’ Regionals are next week in Kingsville and the Girls’ State Meet will be taking place during spring break.

Again, thanks to everyone for your support of Girls Powerlifting and Pirate Athletics.
